  • "I Trust WomenI do not feel the need to say more than, "I trust women." After watching Rick Perry and our Texas Representatives spend millions of dollars to gut Roe versus Wade during two special sessions this summer I came to the conclusion that those in favor of the legislation did not trust women to make their own decisions.I am appalled at how often women have come under attack not only in our state but by the nation at large. In an effort to gain political power many of our representatives have put women on the line to ensure a seat in the upcoming elections. Unfortunately, this anti-women legislation has not only prevented their ability to receive safe and affordable abortions, but it has also shut down many clinics that offered inexpensive sexually transmitted infection testing, contraception, prenatal care, and many other services essential to women's health in our state. As your representative, I will no longer slash funding for women's health care. I refuse to continually place women on the frontlines of our political ideologies. The government should not determine the decisions that a woman makes. Unlike republicans, when I say women are a priority I mean that I hope to spend less time focusing on issues that only affect them. Women of this great nation are capable and have every right to make decisions for themselves." (votesmart.org)
  • We must have a strong middle class in this country, because when the middle class succeeds, America succeeds. The only way to do this is to close corporate loopholes and require everyone to pay their equitable share. (votesmart.org)
  • We must have a strong middle class in this country, because when the middle class succeeds, America succeeds. The only way to do this is to close corporate loopholes and require everyone to pay their equitable share.I will work to build coalitions to eliminate waste, tighten the purse-strings, and streamline government. In uncertain times such as these, we need smarter government to confront the challenge of our economic future, and I will put the needs of West Texas and Big Country families first. • I am committed to ensuring every child in District 19 has access to a world class public education. I will work in Congress to ensure laws are passed to make that a reality. (votesmart.org)
  • "Our energy future is as limitless as the West Texas horizon and our greatest natural resources are wind and solar. This is the leading congressional district for wind energy capacity in the entire United States and our current representative refused to renew the Production Tax Credit for wind energy, saying "its time the industry stood on its own.I've visited with county officials in every corner of this district and they've told me flat out: we need wind energy now.The next great American energy success story will be in West Texas and we need a representative that supports innovation and ingenuity in District 19.I'm ready to go to Washington and join with the bipartisan effort to bolster energy jobs right here at home and secure American energy independence." • There are 138,076 people in this district with no health insurance. That is 19% of our population and it is disproportionally the working poor.I am a committed advocate of the Affordable Care Act. This bill put health services in reach for many for the first time in decades and will significantly reduce costs, establishes better coverage standards, and slash hospital write offs that pass the buck to the taxpayer.I am committed to expanding Medicaid coverage for those still left out in the cold and cracking down on insurance companies who are raising premiums or booting policyholders instead of upgrading their coverage to meet the standards of the bill.I will work to make the ACA a better bill because we can't play politics with West Texans' health. • Undocumented Citizens Are Humans with RightsImmigration is a vast and complex topic. First, I firmly believe that we need to create a path to citizenship for persons who have are already living within our borders. Second, I am strongly opposed to legislation that allows federal and local officers to racially profile people in order to "check" their immigration status. Third, it is imperative that we impose and enforce fines against United States employers who hire undocumented citizens. We are a country that prides ourselves on life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness and by allowing employers to hire undocumented citizens for little to no pay we are placing a wedge between humans and their inalienable rights.
