After watching Rick Perry and our Texas Representatives spend millions of dollars to gut Roe versus Wade during two special sessions this summer I came to the conclusion that those in favor of the legislation did not trust women to make their own decisions.I am appalled at how often women have come under attack not only in our state but by the nation at large. In an effort to gain political power many of our representatives have put women on the line to ensure a seat in the upcoming elections. Unfortunately, this anti-women legislation has not only prevented their ability to receive safe and affordable abortions, but it has also shut down many clinics that offered inexpensive sexually transmitted infection testing, contraception, prenatal care, and many other services essential to women's health in our state.As your representative, I will no longer slash funding for women's health care. I refuse to continually place women on the frontlines of our political ideologies. The government should not determine the decisions that a woman makes. Unlike republicans, when I say women are a priority I mean that I hope to spend less time focusing on issues that only affect them. First, I firmly believe that we need to create a path to citizenship for persons who have are already living within our borders. Second, I am strongly opposed to legislation that allows federal and local officers to racially profile people in order to "check" their immigration status. Third, it is imperative that we impose and enforce fines against United States employers who hire undocumented citizens.We are a country that prides ourselves on life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness and by allowing employers to hire undocumented citizens for little to no pay we are placing a wedge between humans and their inalienable rights.
